Formulation Forum 2020 AGM and lecture

Synopsis

The Chair and committee members of SCI's Formulation Forum Group cordially invite members to their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 3.00pm on 3 December 2020. All members and guests are welcome to attend (only SCI members will be able to vote).

AGM documents will be available to view before the meeting from the secure member's area (you will need to login to the SCI website to view).

The AGM will be followed by an invited talk by Dr J. Robinson - "How effective are face coverings at preventing transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through droplets and aerosols?"

In the COVID–19 pandemic, among the more controversial issues is the use of face coverings. Here we try to address the question: how effective are face coverings? To do this we explore how effective a common fabrics are at filtering out particles of various sizes. We show that cloth face coverings and surgical masks are expected to reduce exposure to infectious droplets and aerosols, especially when both the inhaler *and* exhaler are masked. We argue that the risk of secondary infections should be significantly reduced by mask wearing, except in rare cases where an infected person sheds extreme quantities of virus ("supershedders") which necessitates additional preventative measures.

The SCI Formulation Forum welcomes applications from formulation scientists both in industry and academia who are interested to join the committee. The Formulation Forum actively supports and promotes formulation science both in industry and academia. Please note that elected applicants will be expected to play an active role in committee business including contributing to the organisation of events, and participating in person in events and committee meetings*

In addition to industrial and academic formulation experts, the Formulation Forum has created especially two positions for students who have an interest in formulation science (Ph.D. level) and two positions for early careers formulation scientists**. These positions are created to encourage younger researchers to contribute to the formulation community and also to offer younger researchers the rewarding opportunity to learn more about how committees function as a career development opportunity.

**Early careers are defined as normally up to 10 years after completion of first degree or up to 10 years after starting a first position in business, science or engineering, whichever comes sooner.

Speakers

Dr Joshua Robinson

After completing his Master's at the University of Manchester, Joshua moved to the University of Bristol to start a PhD working under Paddy Royall. There he has been developing theory in fundamental problems of dynamically arrested colloidal systems and aerosols, working closely with the Bristol Aerosol Research Centre for the latter. Following completion of his PhD Joshua continued as a post-doc in Bristol and since April he has dedicated himself to exploring the effectiveness of face coverings using a theoretical approach, as part of Bristol's COVID-19 Emergency Research Group.
