Synopsis

The University of Warwick Crop Centre has been a site of horticultural crop research for more than 70 years since it was first established in 1949 as the National Vegetable Research Station. Today research at the site focuses on crop pests and disease, pest and disease modelling, crop production and crop improvement. Research is carried out on crops including onions, Brassicas, carrots and lettuce.

The visit will include talks from Dr Lauren Chappell and Dr Rosanne Maguire, researchers based at the Crop Centre. Dr Chappell works on the Vegetable Genetic Improvement Network, a collaborative network between academia and industry, which aims to develop genetic resources and tools for breeding in field vegetables. Dr Maguires research focuses on systemic innovation in the food system. The visit will also involve a tour of the crop centre facilities, including specialist outdoor research fields, the Natural Light Centre and the UK Vegetable Genebank.

The visit will end with the SCI Horticulture Group AGM (for Group members only).
