Founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in 2020, The Earthshot Prize is a £1,000,000 global environmental prize to discover, accelerate and scale ground-breaking eco-solutions to repair and regenerate the planet. The Earthshot Prize aims to catalyse an Earthshot challenge to urgently encourage and scale innovative solutions that can help put the world firmly on a trajectory towards a stable climate, where communities, oceans and biodiversity thrive in harmony by 2030.
In December 2022, Prince William revealed the 2022 Earthshot Prize winners at a globally broadcast ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts. Notpla won the Earthshot Prize in the category of ‘Build a Waste-Free World”.
In this talk, Tristan Kaye, Commercial Director at Notpla will unveil how seaweed is emerging as a powerful alternative to many single-use plastics. Seaweed is one of nature’s most renewable resources, and it has the potential to create packaging materials that can truly, and sustainably, break down at end-of-life. A growing industry, seaweed is already used in many products that we consume on a daily basis, and its ongoing cultivation offers a wider set of benefits to us all.
While working in the oil & gas industry across South East Asia, Tristan experienced first-hand the problem of plastics accumulating on beaches and in our oceans. Now with Notpla, he’s focusing on developing viable alternatives to the traditional, and newer but potentially questionable, packaging materials for a range of consumer industries.
