Synopsis
The Historic Croydon Airport Trust is set to preserve the history of London Croydon Airport and to educate the public on its heritage. The original Charity was set up in the late 1970s and became a CIO in 2016. It was London's first Airport in 1920 and handed over that mantle to newly created Heathrow in 1946.
Croydon Airport still has several of the original 1920s buildings including the Grade 2* listed Airport House, the world's first integrated air terminal which opened in 1928, where today the trust houses the Croydon Airport Visitors Centre and Museum in the Control tower. Guided tours are offered on the first Sunday of each month and are generally full soon after booking becomes available. The talk will cover the origins of Croydon Airport, as well as the golden years of air travel when Croydon was core to international travel until its ultimate closure in 1959.
