Yorkshire and the Humber Group Awards Ceremony and Public Lecture 2014

Organised by:

SCI's Yorkshire and Humber group

University of Huddersfield

Registration Closed

This event is no longer available for registration.

Synopsis
The SCI Yorkshire and the Humber Group's 2014 Awards will be presented prior to the Public Lecture. Prof Joe Sweeney, Chair of the SCI Yorkshire and Humber Group, will present the SCI Chemistry for Industry Award to Prof John Blacker of the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds, and the SCI Science for Society Award to Miranda Stephenson for her work at the National Science Learning Centre.

The Public Lecture will be delivered by Dr Paul Elliott of the University of Huddersfield on 'Illuminating Chemistry: the Molecular Manipulation of Light'.

Light from the Sun is vital for the existence of life on Earth through the energy it provides. Many organisms produce light-absorbing pigments to harness and utilise the energy of this incident sunlight or simply to give intense colouration. Others can also produce light through bioluminescence. These processes require complex molecular organisation. Humanity has, through chemistry, tried to similarly harness light to produce fuels, make highly coloured light absorbing dyes and make materials that emit light for example. This lecture will look at the interactions between light and matter. In doing so we will address various questions such as what is light, and what is colour? We will explore how molecular engineering can be used to tune the apparent visible colour of materials or the luminescence they produce and how molecules can be designed to harness light to produce fuels or electricity.

The Group's Annual General Meeting will also be held on the same day, at 16:30 at the University of Huddersfield.
