Why cell and gene therapy are the future of medicine

17 February 2026 | Steve Ranger

Cell and gene therapy could deliver remarkable innovation for patient health. And beyond the benefits to the individual, these new treatments could also have a far-reaching impact across the broader healthcare system.

This is the subject of SCItalks ‘Why is cell and gene therapy the future of medicine?’ to be given by Matthew Durdy, Chief Executive of the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult.

The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult is an independent innovation and technology organisation committed to the advancement of these therapies.

“I’m going to be talking about cell and gene therapy because they are the future of our approach to medicine. Historically medicine has been about symptomatic treatment; cell and gene therapy are about the route cause, and it’s a way for medicine to be turned on its head, where you say: ‘Let’s take away the cause of the problem’,” Durdy says.

“That may seem like a very simple statement, but it completely changes the way in which healthcare takes place,” he says.

It’s also a completely different healthcare experience as well, with implications for regulation, cost and patient expectations. “In a world where we are trying to change the dynamics of treatment, cell and gene therapy is the vanguard of that change,” says Durdy.

Matthew Durdy is Chief Executive of the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult and was part of the founding team in 2012. Before 2020, he was Chief Business Officer and was responsible for strategy, communications, marketing, and business development. He is a global champion for the early integration of healthcare economics and reimbursement expertise into decision-making and clinical product design.

SCI’s SCItalks are given by the most prominent and influential academics, thinkers and industry leaders who are working to translate scientific innovation into societal impact. These talks form part of an SCI’s charitable outreach which seeks to create public conversations about science-based topics in a way that is accessible to all. This is the second in a three-part SCItalks series on sustainability.

This session is taking place 25 February 2026 online at 4pm.
