Bailey Czuy is a 2023 Canada Student Merit Award winner. She achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of her class in the fourth and final year of her degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
As a child, Bailey always had a keen interest in sciences and mathematics, but was never quite sure what she wanted to pursue in the future. In Grade 11, Bailey had the opportunity to participate in the Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology (WISEST) programme at the University of Alberta. Here she had the chance to network and learn about the different career paths that existed for women in STEM. By participating in this programme, she had the opportunity to work in the Faculty of Engineering where she was inspired to pursue Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta upon graduation.
Bailey enjoyed her time in engineering at the University of Alberta and learned a lot both inside and outside of the classroom. By participating in the co-op program, she had the chance to work at three different companies in different fields, allowing her to gain a variety of experiences and skills. Bailey developed lifelong friendships with classmates and was taught by inspiring faculty members. Although her time as an undergraduate student in engineering is now over, she is eager to begin her journey as an engineer. Bailey is currently working as a Process Engineer in Training at Suncor Energy Inc.
One of her favourite memories from this time was working alongside her team on their capstone project. Over the course of the final semester, Bailey and her team put in hundreds of hours on the project and she developed great relationships with academic and industry advisors. She is proud that her team won the Ken Sury Memorial Prize in Chemical Engineering Design for their capstone project. Bailey also received the APEGA Past Presidents' Medal in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta for 2023.
