Zoë Linden Smith, Canada Student Merit Award winner 2024Zoë Linden Smith is a 2024 Canada Student Merit Award winner. She achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of her class in the fourth and final year of her degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.

Zoë obtained a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biochemistry and minors in French and Chemistry from Mount Allison University in May 2024. At Mount Allison, she began her research career studying the toxicity of particulate matter found in wildfire aerosols, and then went on to complete her honours thesis studying the toxic effects of brake pad wear in brook char gills under the supervision of Dr Jenny Wong and Dr Tyson MacCormack.

Zoë also worked with the Faculty of Science as a Teaching Assistant in Chemistry and Biochemistry, the VP Academic on the Chemistry and Biochemistry Society, and as a volunteer and coordinator for the Let’s Talk Science school outreach program for Mount Allison. In the broader University community, she worked as a Residence Assistant, gave campus tours as a Campus Ambassador, planned University Orientation events, and tutored various subjects at the high school and undergraduate level. Zoë is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry at McGill University, where she is working in Dr Sidong Huang’s lab using functional genomics to study therapeutic strategies against cancers deficient in the SMARCA4 gene.
