Maxime Lafond is a 2025 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
"Ever since my first chemistry and physics courses in secondary school, I have developed a strong passion and fascination for understanding how matter works and interacts with its surrounding environment. In college, I had a hard time deciding on my career path until one of my friends introduced me to chemical engineering. I decided to submit an admission application to the University of Sherbrooke in that programme, and I was admitted.
"Shortly after my first two sessions in chemical engineering, I realised that I had made the right choice. I decided to focus my career on one clear objective: to make a meaningful, positive impact on the environment. Throughout my academic journey, I have had the opportunity to complete five internships as part of the co-op programme. Two of them were focused on fundamental research, where I explored catalysts production, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). My three other internships were in industry, where I gained hands-on experience in metallic powders manufacturing, paper production and pigment production. During all of these internships, I contributed to environmental, legal compliance, research and continuous improvement projects.
"Recently, as a part of my final undergraduate project, I took on the role of project manager for the design of a modular methanol synthesis plant (TRL 1-2). I will be pursuing a master’s in research focused on methanol production."
