Former SCI life member, Dr Sydney Andrew FRS recently bequeathed a generous legacy of over £1m to SCI for the founding of the Andrew Medal Lecture on the theme of 'neglected science' (areas of science which though of importance in agriculture and the chemical industry nevertheless receive scant attention from academic research) and for academic research into 'neglected science'.
To fulfil the research element, SCI is pleased to announce a partnership with the Royal Society to fund three PhD studentships, which will complement the existing Royal Society Industry Fellowship Scheme, funding academics to work in industry or people from industry to work in academic institutions for specific innovation projects.
The new Royal Society and Society of Chemical Industry studentships will fund students over three years to work on projects that fall within SCI's remit, ie application of chemistry and related sciences in the following topical areas: food and bio-renewables, water, waste and environment, energy, materials and manufacturing, health and well-being. Applicants will also need to demonstrate that the project meets the definition of 'neglected science' as per the legacy. Prospective fellows will be able to apply for a studentship to augment their project team. Applications will open in January 2013.
The Royal Society will administer the jointly branded studentship programme. Sir Geoffrey Allen FRS, a Past President of SCI and active member of the Membership Affairs Committee, has agreed to act as the SCI observer on the assessment panel to ensure that awards are within the SCI remit and accord with the legacy.
Those awarded the studentships may also be known as the Andrew Scholars and will be invited to join the SCI College of Scholars. Both societies will promote the scheme and it is hoped that this will lead to opportunities for closer engagement with the Royal Society and their Industry Fellows, which are key players from industry or academic institutions.
Note: SCI Scholarships for PhD students and our travel bursary programme will continue to be awarded in addition to the new studentship programme.
