Canada International Award

Established 1975

The International Award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding service and contributions in the international sphere to an industry that is based on chemistry, for its processes and/or services. This definition of industry includes not only traditional chemical companies focusing on chemical manufacture and distribution, but also industries such as biotechnology, coatings, crop protection, environmental services, fertilizer, food, mining/metal extraction, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, plastics, pulp & paper and synthetic fibres.

Award Information

2024 Recipient - Prof Dr Bruno G Pollet, University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières

Prof Dr Bruno Pollet is a world-renowned expert for his work on Hydrogen. He is an electrochemist, a Fellow of the UK Royal Society of Chemistry, a Full Professor of Chemistry, Director of the Hydrogen Research Institute and Director of the Green Hydrogen Lab at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

He currently holds two research chairs, is a member of the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET), and serves on several international associations and industry boards. He has written two books, edited 18 books, published over 260 peer-reviewed academic articles, and has delivered 200+ keynotes and invited talks at international events.

Nominations

The Award is managed by the SCI Canada Nominations Committee and is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding service and contribution. SCI membership is not a prerequisite for receiving this award.

Lecture Details

The award shall normally be presented at the annual SCI Canada Awards Dinner, typically held in early April, where the winner will be expected to attend and deliver a short acceptance speech. The winner may be invited to present a lecture at this event.

The award winner will also receive a plaque.

2023 Recipient - Dr Vaikuntam Iyer Lakshmanan OC, Process Research Ortech Inc

From humble family beginnings, Dr Lakshmanan became an international expert in clean separation technologies for obtaining high purity base/rare metals and specialty chemicals as well environmentally sound technologies for solid waste treatment and effluent separation. He is also an inspirational mentor for the current generation of professional chemists and a passionate philanthropist.

The award will be presented at the SCI Canada Awards 2023.

2022 Recipient - Joe Cargnelli, Chief Technology Officer of Cummins Inc

In late 1995, Joe co-founded and launched Hydrogenics Corporation (now known as Cummins Inc.), which became a billion dollar valued, NASDAQ-listed hydrogen fuel cell company. Hydrogenics has won several awards including Canada’s fastest growing company in 2003 and PwC Canada Innovator of the Year Award 2016.

The award was presented at the SCI Canada Awards in May 2022.

The Canada Medal is awarded to a business leader for outstanding service in a Canadian industry, who has had a clearly positive impact on their business that is based on chemistry for its processes and/or services.

Canada International Award

The Canada International Award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding service and contributions in the international sphere to an industry that is based on chemistry for its processes and/or services.

Julia Levy Award

The Julia Levy Award is presented to an individual to recognize successful commercialization of innovation in Canada, specifically in the field of Bio-medical Science and Engineering.

Canada Student Merit Awards

The SCI Canada Student Merit Award is awarded annually to the student who has achieved the highest standing in the 4th and final year of a chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering undergraduate program.
