Sustainability Award

The Sustainability Award is presented to an individual or team in recognition of science innovation in industry which has led to significant, measurable improvements in environmental sustainability in product/process development or of business/operational processes. The award is open to an individual or team working in a company of any size or country.

Award Information

Nominations

The Award is managed by SCI. Applications will be accepted by self-nomination.

Nominations will consist of a completed online nomination form and details of the sustainability improvements made by completion of an electronic application form sent to awards@soci.org.

Presentation of Award

The award will be presented at SCI's annual awards dinner in May by a member of the judging panel, or an invited guest of high standing in the scientific and industrial communities.

Winners will received a framed certificate and a trophy for the individual/team named in the application.

Eligibility Criteria

    Background
    • Any individual or team working in a company of any size or country
    • Applicants must be able to demonstrate significant improvement to the overall environmental sustainability of the company
    Areas
    • An industry that has a primary focus in products/processes requiring chemistry or chemistry-related science
    • Innovations must be related to science across SCI key theme areas of Global Health, Climate Change and Sustainability
    • Evidence of demonstrable, measurable outcomes as a result of the innovation will be requested as part of the application process
    • Applications which can demonstrate a material impact for society will be favoured

2024 Recipients

  • WINNER: Cargill - development of a biodegradable alternative to petroleum jelly used in skincare and personal care products.
  • 2nd place: Johnson Matthey - recycling the platinum group metals and valuable ionomers from fuel cells and water-electrolysers using its HyRefineTM technology.
  • 3rd place: Low Carbon Materials - carbon-negative aggregate that can be incorporated into a variety of concrete applications to lower its carbon emissions.

Canada Medal

The Canada Medal is awarded to a business leader for outstanding service in a Canadian industry, who has had a clearly positive impact on their business that is based on chemistry for its processes and/or services.

Purvis Memorial Award

The Purvis Memorial Award recognizes an individual for significant strategy development and successful implementation within the Canadian chemical Industry.

Kalev Pugi Award

The Kalev Pugi Award acknowledges exceptional achievements in research and development by an individual or team, which is of benefit to Canada. The technical excellence can be developed in a university, industrial setting or a research institution in Canada.

SCI Canada Outreach Award

The Outreach Award recognizes a Canadian organization, individual or team that has demonstrated sustained effort engaging the public in learning about chemistry and its impact on society.

LeSueur Memorial Award

The LeSueur Memorial Award is presented to an individual for the development of technical excellence, in either a university/research institute or industrial setting in Canada.

Canada International Award

The Canada International Award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding service and contributions in the international sphere to an industry that is based on chemistry for its processes and/or services.

Julia Levy Award

The Julia Levy Award is presented to an individual to recognize successful commercialization of innovation in Canada, specifically in the field of Bio-medical Science and Engineering.

Canada Student Merit Awards

The SCI Canada Student Merit Award is awarded annually to the student who has achieved the highest standing in the 4th and final year of a chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering undergraduate program.
