Perkin Medal

The Perkin Medal is widely acknowledged as the highest honour in American industrial chemistry. Sir William Perkin was a founding Member of SCI and this Medal was first presented in New York to Perkin himself.

Award Information

Medal History

The Perkin Medal was established in 1906 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of mauveine. The first Perkin Medal recipient was Sir William Perkin (1838-1907), a founding Member of SCI who created the world's first synthetic dye, mauveine, at the age of 18 and was presented with this medal in New York.

Nominations

Nominated by SCI America, or the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, or the Science History Institute to US scientists who have created innovation in applied chemistry.

Presentation Details

Selected by the SCI America Group Chair, SCI America Group Vice Chair, SCI America Group Immediate Past Chair, America Chemical Society President, America Institute of Chemical Engineers President, Science History Institute President.

The award consists of a medal presentation and an address by the recipient in September at a meeting of the America Group.
