The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the European Patent Office (EPO) have established a bilateral cooperation agreement with the aim of promoting innovation in sustainable energy technologies.
Under the agreement the organisations will publish a series of joint studies over the next three years to inform policy makers and the public, about technology trends in areas that are critical for the energy transition and climate change mitigation.
The first report under the agreement was released at the end of September 2020. The Innovation in Batteries and Electricity Storage report reveals that; over the past ten years, patenting activity in these technologies grew four times faster than the average of all technologies. The report also highlights that much more technological progress in electricity storage will be needed in future to meet the demands of the energy transition.
The joint study provides global data and analysis based on the international patent families filed in the field of electricity storage since 2000. The IEA and the EPO said that their large respective stakeholders communities, built up during almost 50 years, will significantly increase the impact their joint studies.
