With the world emerging from lockdown, albeit cautiously, plans are being laid by the major economies for the so called ‘Green Recovery’.
In the coming weeks SCI will be documenting steps being taken and how science, and chemistry, will play an important role in helping build the cleaner, greener more resilient future. Keep an eye on our Green Recovery File to follow the progress being made.
The Green Recovery is focused on preventing a return to the levels of emissions seen before the Covid-19 pandemic took hold. By extension it also relates to how businesses, and society as a whole, will function in the future.
As global economies begin the task of focusing on what this future could look like, the International Energy Agency (IEA) will be hosting the IEA Clean Energy Transitions Summit on 9th July. The live streamed event will comprise high-level panels focusing on: Accelerating Clean Energy Technology Innovation, an Inclusive and Equitable Recovery and a Resilient and Sustainable Electricity Sector. There will also be discussion on measures to boost economies, create jobs and reduce emissions.
Ministers from countries representing the vast majority of the global GDP, energy use and green house gas emissions will be taking part. Participants will include Minister Zhang Jianhua of China, US Secretary Dan Brouillette, the EU’s Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and UK Secretary of State Alok Sharma. In addition Presidents from the Asian Development Bank, the World Economic Forum and CEOs from across the energy sector, major investors and representatives from civil society will also participate.
The IEA said ‘The ministers in attendance will represent almost 80% of global energy consumption and global carbon emissions, making the Summit the highest-profile energy and climate discussion since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.’
As plans are put in place we will be sharing news on progress of the global ‘Green Recovery’.
