Johnson Matthey and SFC Energy collaborate on hydrogen fuel cells

‘We are expanding our fuel cell competencies and will benefit greatly from the agreement with the target of cost reduction and further performance enhancement.’

Johnson Matthey has signed several agreements to further its cooperation with SFC Energy.

Germany-based SFC Energy is a leading supplier of hydrogen and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) for stationary and mobile hybrid power applications.

Supporting SFC Energy’s growth in hydrogen fuel cells, Johnson Matthey will develop and supply proton exchange membrane (PEM) components to the company. The PEM components are used by SFC Energy for its H2-PEM stack, which is the core of SFC Energy’s hydrogen fuel cell. As well as this supply agreement, the partners have signed a Memorandum of Understanding setting out plans to cooperate in the field of hydrogen fuel cells for stationary applications where PEM components will be developed jointly.

These latest announcements mark an extension of the partnership between the two companies, established some 20 years ago, which to date has focused on Johnson Matthey supplying assets and technology so that SFC Energy can produce components for its DMFC systems.

Now SFC Energy will acquire Johnson Matthey’s assets and technology for the production components at SFC Energy’s new manufacturing site near Swindon, UK. To secure its supply of catalysts for DMFC fuel cells, SFC Energy has also entered into a long-term supply agreement in which Johnson Matthey commits to supply catalysts for DMFC fuel cells to SFC Energy for at least five years.

‘We are expanding our fuel cell competencies and will benefit greatly from the agreement with the target of cost reduction and further performance enhancement. We are pleased that Johnson Matthey will continue to be by our side. The long-term supply of catalysts for DMFC and the agreement to work on hydrogen PEM components show that we are convinced of the quality of Johnson Matthey and will continue to rely on this proven partnership,’ said Dr Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy.
