Bin Zhang was awarded a Rideal Travel Bursary to attend the 18th International Congress on Catalysis in Lyon, France. Here he tells us about his research and highlights from the conference. Read his report below.
"The International Congress on Catalysis (ICC) is organised by the International Association of Catalysis Societies and is held every four years, coinciding with the Olympic cycle. It is also known as the "Catalytic Olympics". Since its inception in 1956 in Philadelphia, USA, the congress has significantly impacted the advancement of catalysis science and technology worldwide.
"From July 14th to 19th, the 18th International Congress on Catalysis (18th ICC) was held in Lyon, France. This year’s conference, themed “Roots and Wings for a Better World,” drew over 2,300 participants from 67 countries, including leading experts and scholars from both industry and academia. The conference featured 5 plenary lectures, 3 International Catalysis Award presentations (Heinz Heinemann Awards), 25 keynote lectures, 510 oral presentations (including short oral presentations), and 1,371 poster presentations. The conference covered 32 topics, including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, single-atom catalysis, CO/CO2 conversion, theoretical calculations, plastic recycling and conversion, biomass conversion, refining, and petrochemicals. It comprehensively showcased the significant progress and achievements made in the international catalysis field in recent years.
"As a recipient of the Rideal Travel Bursary award, I delivered a 20-minute oral presentation titled "Ambient-pressure Alkoxycarbonylation for Linear-selective Synthesis of Esters" during the session on Valorisation of C1 Molecules (CH4, CO, MeOH) Except CO2. My work emphasised the potential for innovative catalytic processes to drive more sustainable chemical production."
