Yorkshire and Humber Group Awards 2013

20 Dec 2013

The Yorkshire and Humber Group hosted its annual Awards Ceremony at the University of Huddersfield on 11 December 2013.

The evening kicked off with a networking reception and poster session on 'New Chemo- and Bio-Catalytic Methods for Synthesis’. Dr Brian Iddon, SCI Trustee, then presented the SCI awards to Prof John Atherton (SCI Chemistry for Industry Award) for his on-going research in physical organic chemistry and Prof Terry Wilkins (SCI R&D for Society Award) for his knowledge and passion in the engineering of nanotechnology and advanced materials.

The Public Lecture was then given by Dr Martin Carr, of the University of Huddersfield, on 'The Tree of Life'. The talk began with the idea that humans are just a twig on the tree of life and continued to and show how and when animals evolved from their single-celled ancestors. Finally, he described how modern molecular studies and genome sequencing have changed ideas on the evolutionary relationships between different animal groups.
