Emma Thompson was awarded the Rideal Travel Bursary to attend the 14th International Conference on Magnetic Resonance Microscopy, 13 – 17 August 2017. Here, she tells us about the conference and her opportunity to gain feedback on her research and presentation skills.

'I recently attended the 14th International Conference on Magnetic Resonance Microscopy, which was held in Halifax, Canada from 13 – 17 August 2017. I was accepted to give an oral presentation as part of the porous media session of the conference.

'My presentation was entitled ‘Magnetic Resonance Imaging of vesicle-polymer mixtures’, which has been the focus of my research during my PhD. I have been able to expand the understanding of gel formation in these complex systems. My presentation was well received and I gained a lot of positive feedback on my research and presentation skills.

'The conference provided a wide range of talks, from new techniques in the area to varied applications of magnetic resonance. Some of these have given me new ideas relating to my research as well as allowing me an insight into other research areas. I was able to talk to many of the presenters, had the opportunity to network with some of the research leaders in my field and was able to discuss potential opportunities for after my PhD.

'As I had never visited Nova Scotia before, the conference allowed me the chance to explore the area around and in Halifax. The conference also held its dinner in the Pier 21, the immigration museum, which gave a beautiful view of Halifax harbour, as well as a talk that provided me with some of the history of the area.

'I would like to thank my supervisor, Dr Melanie Britton, for her encouragement and support to attend such a fantastic conference. I would also like to thank the conference organisers for allowing me to present my work.

'A special thanks goes to SCI and RSC for awarding me the Rideal travel grant which allowed me to attend the conference.’
