Brooke Rapien, University of Guelph, is a 2020 Canada Student Merit Award winner. She achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of her class in the fourth and final year of her degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
In 2015, Brooke began her Honours Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Guelph in Chemistry (co-op). She was awarded the Dr. Robert McCrindle Academic Scholarship in Chemistry for having the highest high school average of incoming students to the Honours Chemistry program. In January 2018, she received the Honours Chemistry Scholarship for receiving the highest cumulative average over four semesters in the Honours Chemistry program.
While attending the University of Guelph, Brooke studied organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and environmental chemistry. She excelled in the laboratory components of these courses and learned valuable skills with analytical equipment and techniques. Brooke had the opportunity to apply her knowledge and further her education by completing co-op work terms in the fields of pharmaceuticals, computer science, and biological/environmental education. Outside of the lab, Brooke indulged in her passion for international relations and world issues with her involvement in the University of Guelph Model United Nations Club. Brooke became a strong leader as she served as Secretary (May 2017 - April 2018) and President (May 2018 - April 2019) of the club.
In February 2020, Brooke graduated with distinction and has since begun her career as a Laboratory Technician in Oil Analysis and Equipment Maintenance. She has enjoyed utilizing her extensive laboratory knowledge and skills in new industries such as renewable energy, oil and gas, mining, transportation, and industrial plants.
In her spare time, Brooke enjoys hiking with her dog, camping, and photography.
