Tanner Lockwood is a 2022 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
"I am greatly honoured to have received the SCI Student Merit Award. My post-secondary education began with me completing a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at the University of Lethbridge. I thoroughly enjoyed both the biology and chemistry classes, with a special interest in pharmacology. My passion for education allowed me to stay focused on succeeding in my coursework, and I graduated with a 4.0 GPA.
"During my studies as an undergraduate student, I received several scholarships and awards including two NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Awards. These awards gave the opportunity to participate in numerous research projects in Dr Roy Golsteyn’s Natural Product Laboratory, where I investigated the diversity of native Albertan prairie plant species and the bioactive compounds within them. These research projects have allowed me to better appreciate the natural world, as I have gotten to see first-hand the connections between people and their environment. To learn more about these plants and how their natural products can be connected to health, I am continuing my academic journey as a Master of Science student in the Natural Product Laboratory at the University of Lethbridge. I have also joined Partage Biotech as a lab technologist, to apply my natural product knowledge to industry.
"Outside of the lab, I enjoy practicing piano and playing board games with friends and family. I also enjoy keeping up with new developments in fields related to biology and chemistry.
"I hope to use the knowledge I have gained throughout my academic journey to pursue a future career in drug discovery."
