Xiaocong Zhang is a 2020 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
I was born in Beijing, China, and I lived there for the first 13 years of my life. When I came to Montreal, Canada in 2011 with my family, I struggled a lot to adapt to the new environment. Fortunately, I managed to improve both my English and French language skills quickly. As such, I was able to graduate from a francophone high school and an anglophone pre-university college before entering McGill University.
The undergraduate studies at McGill have really broadened my knowledge in the field of chemistry. As an undergrad, I have also had research experiences in the forms of an undergrad summer research and an honours project in the fall and winter semesters because I was very curious about research in chemistry. These experiences have really taught me how to use the knowledge I learned and to put it into practice. They have also sparked my interest in pursuing studies at the graduate level since I feel like there is still much more to learn and to practice. Therefore, I have chosen to stay at McGill for my graduate studies.
It is truly an honour to be the recipient of the SCI Canada Student Merit Award. This does not only serve as a confirmation of my past efforts, but also as an important milestone in my academic path. Regardless of where I am in the future, this award will always be a reminder for me to continue working hard and persevering, and that results will always follow.
