Coca -Cola has unveiled what is said to be the first ever sample drinks bottle made from recovered and recycled marine plastic. The company said that the sample product is the first plastic bottle made using marine litter that has been successfully recycled and reused in food and drink packaging.

Around 300 sample bottles have been produced using 25%-recycled marine plastic retrieved from the Mediterranean Sea and beaches. The sample bottles are the result of a partnership between Ioniqa Technologies, Indorama Ventures, Mares Circulares and The Coca-Cola Company. Although enhanced recycling is still in its infancy, Coco-Cola said, the partners produced the sample marine plastic bottle as a proof of concept for what the technology may achieve in time.

In the immediate term, enhanced recycling will be introduced at commercial scale using waste streams from existing recyclers. By 2020 Coca-Cola plans to roll out this enhanced recycled content in some of its bottles.

Highlighting the revolution that is taking place in the sector, leading European food packaging manufacturer Coveris used September’s Lunch Show, held in London, to showcase its latest product innovations and share how its Pack Positive strategy is set to deliver the future of takeaway packaging.

The company said that the demand for food-to-go packaging solutions that protect both the product and the environment mean that the sector provides one of the most exciting packaging development opportunities in the industry.

Gearing up for the UK Government’s focus on the circular economy, the company has set out its development strategy in its 2022 Roadmap to Recyclability discussing how it will meet guidelines on paper and board recyclability which will change in 2022.

Coveris will be one of the companies speaking at SCI’s Sustainable Food Packaging: Overcoming Challenges through Circular Approaches conference which will take place on 29 November 2019 in London.

The event will explore trends in food packaging design as well as looking at the pressure the industry faces to meet consumer demand for reduced waste and improved shelf life.
