Kickstart your career 2016 another excellent networking opportunity for students

22 Feb 2016

This year’s SCI Liverpool and North West KickStart your Career evening was hosted by the Chemical Engineering Department at The University of Chester, Thornton Campus. The event followed a tried and tested format, which means putting students from various science and engineering degrees in contact with people who are currently working in those fields, to give an idea of the range of employment available to graduates, and how people have got to where they are now following their degrees.

We started the evening with presentations from two Chemical Engineers, three Chemists, a science teacher and an ambassador from Mersey STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. There was also a presentation covering CVs, how to get these and your covering letters right to give you the best chance of getting your foot in the door! There was a final presentation on SCI; what SCI’s Liverpool & North West Group do, and how to get involved. A special KickStart membership rate of only £5 for the year was offered for attendees at this event which was well received.

Following the presentations students mingled with academics and industrialists to ask the questions they really wanted answering, about the world of work after university. Stands with volunteers, information and merchandise were available from Mexichem, Unilever and SCI.

There were approximately 85 students present from Chester, Manchester, Bangor and Liverpool, and about 20 'helpers' from academia and industry. The evening was a great success. Special thanks go to Prof Steve Wilkinson for hosting the event and providing excellent catering, and our sponsors Mexichem and Unilever.
