7 July 2017
As part of SCI's 136th AGM, Dr Len Copping lead presentation of the Distinguished Service Awards (DSA) and prestigious Lampitt Medal. This year, the Lampitt Medal was awarded to Sir Geoffrey Allen, described as ‘a true SCI giant’. Sir Geoffrey spoke of his involvement with SCI and how he first became involved with the Society through a connection with ICI. He was SCI President 1989-1991 and spoke of how he enjoyed it so much he stayed on, contributing to the development of the popular Public Evening Lectures and Early Careers initiative.
Each of the DSA recipients also gave a short speech on their experiences with SCI, with the emerging theme that their first connections with the Society happened through industry, then grew with the inspirational and supportive network of both academic and industrial scientists present in the network.
Interviews with each of the DSA 2017 recipients can be found here:
- John Fifield, Construction Materials Committee
- Dr Trevor Rhodes, Liverpool and North West Committee
- Dr David Witty, Fine Chemicals Group, Ordinary Member of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the Membership Committee
SCI would like to thank Sir Geoffrey Allen and all of the DSA 2017 recipients for their dedicated and continued support of the Society.
