SCI’s prestigious Society Member Recognition Awards, the Lampitt Medal and the Distinguished Service Award (DSA), will be presented at this year’s 136th SCI AGM, 5 July 2017. The Lampitt medal commemorates Leslie Lampitt (1887-1957) and is reserved for SCI members who have given their own gifts of time, leadership, vision and enthusiasm to more than one area of the Society's activities. SCI is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Lampitt medal is Sir Geoffrey Allen, who has been an SCI member since 1984 and was SCI President 1989 – 1991. As a past president, he continued to work with SCI, sitting on the Membership Affairs Committee (MAC) as an elected member from 2009 – 2013 and co-opted 2013 – 2015. He was a member of the Council 2000 – 2002 and won the Leverhulme prize in 1990, for which he presented a lecture on ‘Our Chemical Industry 2001’.
The Distinguished Service Awards are presented to members of the Society who have contributed significant and sustained service to at least one element (normally a Group) in the SCI structure for ten years or more. SCI is pleased to announce the recipients of the DSA for 2017 are John Fifield, Dr Trevor Rhodes and Dr David Witty.
John Fifield has been an SCI member for approaching 50 years in total and is a member of the Construction Materials, Science & Enterprise and London Groups. He has been a longstanding and dedicated committee member for the Construction Materials Group and recently served as chair, where he oversaw changes to the committee structure that have improved its working efficiency. He is a member of several BSI and CEN technical committees and, as a senior expert, has taken an active role in the training and mentoring of technical staff, particularly through promoting membership of SCI.
Dr Trevor Rhodes joined SCI April 2007 and has been a Liverpool and North West Committee member since 2008 (co-opted in May 2008); he has been Section Chair twice (2010-2013 and 2016 – present) and Vice-chair twice (2009-2010 and 2013-2106). Trevor has made a number of presentations directly relating to SCI and regularly attends HQ meetings (eg AGM, Landmark). His attendance at RIG committee and planning sub-committee is exemplary.
Dr David Witty has been a highly valued member of the Fine Chemicals Group (FCG) since 1999 and has served on its committee since 2003. During his six years as an Officer, he was influential in growing and developing the committee to its current vibrant state. This was in no small part due to his vision for a more inclusive group, reflecting the changing nature of the fine chemicals landscape, which saw the Committee expand with increased representation from CROs and smaller companies. In Summer 2016, David stepped down from the FCG as was elected on to the SCI Board of Trustees where he continues to contribute to SCI activities in a much broader sense directed towards SCI Strategy.
SCI would like to thank Lampitt Medal recipient, Sir Geoffrey Allen, and all the 2017 DSA recipients, for their dedicated support of SCI, and congratulate them on this achievement.
SCI's 2017 AGM will take place on 5 July 2017, where the Lampitt Medal and DSA awards will be presented and all SCI members are welcome to attend.
