Board of Trustees update: Aug 2012

16 Aug 2012

Trustees discussed the impact of open access publishing on SCI on 4 July. Our Publications Advisory Committee is monitoring the debate closely and SCI, along with other learned societies, has written to MP David Willetts regarding the Finch Report, expressing our view that any transition must be handled with care and that a mix of publication models should be supported so learned societies can meet the differing needs of researchers worldwide and continue to generate surpluses from publications activities to fulfil their charitable objectives for wider benefit. The letter may be viewed via the Executive Director's Forum, where you can express your views.

The BoT also discussed the review of awards, in particular the most effective model for Travel Bursaries. This requires further work and an announcement will be made when the new model has been agreed. SCI Scholarships will be reintroduced for 2013 with three £5,000 scholarships, payable over a two year period, available to PhD students in their second year of research. The Board is committed to Early Career support activities that assist the beneficiaries, encourage their continued participation in SCI and promote SCI's image.
