The annual Chemistry Research Day, organised by SCI’s Thames and Kennet Group in association with University of Reading, took place at the University of Reading on Tuesday 9 June 2015, and approximately 60 people attended. Postgraduate students in the third year of their PhD degree delivered oral presentations on subjects as diverse as the synthesis of novel polymers, the analysis of soils and mesoporous catalysts. In the afternoon, there was a poster session, during which PhD students and postdoctoral researchers presented their work on a wide variety of topics, covering all areas of chemistry.
The quality of the talks and posters was excellent, and there were lively and animated question sessions after each oral presentation.
After much deliberation, the three judges, Prof Harry Heaney (Loughborough University), Prof David Thornthwaite (Unilever) and Dr Chris Nicklin (Diamond), awarded the SCI presentation prize to Stephen Jones for his talk on High performance copoly(ester-imide)s, with an honourable mention to Michael Budd. The winner of the Rigaku poster prize was Sarah Makin, for her poster on Hybrid supertetrahedral clusters and their chains synthesised in ionic liquids.
The event concluded with a wine reception.
