Andrew N Liveris, chairman and CEO of the Dow Chemical Company, to be Awarded the 2013 SCI Chemical Industry Medal.
SCI's America International Group is presenting the SCI Chemical Industry Medal to Andrew N Liveris, Chairman and CEO of the Dow Chemical Company (Dow) at a dinner in his honour on 12 March 2013, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
The Medal honours an individual whose leadership, commitment and contributions have been responsible for substantial progress and performance in the chemical industry. Mr Liveris is the sixth Dow leader to receive the Chemical Industry honour since the Medal was established in 1933.
'Through his leadership, Andrew has built on Dow's proud 115-year history and led its evolution into a chemistry-based science company for the 21st century,' said Ellen Kullman, chair of SCI. 'He has established himself as a leading voice in the chemical industry and is recognised as a thought leader for issues confronting advanced manufacturing in the US and around the world.'
About Andrew N Liveris
Mr Liveris' 36-year Dow career has spanned roles in manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing, and business and general management. He began his Dow career in 1976 in Australia, and spent a large proportion of his career in Asia where his formative roles included 14 years in Hong Kong, general manager for the company's operations in Thailand, and president of all Asia-Pacific operations. Liveris became a member of Dow's Board of Directors in February 2004, and was named CEO in November 2004. He was elected as Chairman of the Board effective April 1, 2006.
An advocate for the criticality of manufacturing to the long-term health of a nation's economy, Mr Liveris served as Co-Chair of President Obama's Advanced Engineering Partnership in the United States, and is the author of Make It in America, a book released in January 2011 which presents a comprehensive set of practical policy solutions and business strategies that outlines the Dow's vision for an advanced manufacturing economy.
In recognition of his efforts in this arena, Mr Liveris was honoured with the 2011 Distinguished Performance Award for Excellence in Public Policy from the Committee for Economic Development, the Inspired Leadership Award from The Performance Theatre, the International Leadership Award from the United States Council for International Business (USCIB) and the Legend in Leadership Award by the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute.
Mr Liveris sits on the board of directors of IBM, and was recently named as the first non-American chairman of the U.S. Business Council. He is a vice chair of the Business Roundtable, and previously served as president and chairman of the Board of the International Council of Chemical Associations and as a past Chair of the Society of Chemical Industry. He is a member of the US President's Export Council, the US-India CEO Forum, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and the American Australian Association. He serves on the board of trustees for The Herbert H and Grace A Dow Foundation, and Tufts University.
Born in Darwin, Australia, Liveris attended the University of Queensland in Brisbane, graduating with a bachelor's degree (first-class honours) in Chemical Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of The Institute of Chemical Engineers, as well as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering
About the Chemical Industry Medal
The Chemical Industry Medal has been awarded by SCI America for more than 85 years. Presentation is made annually to a recipient selected by the Executive Committee of the America International Group of the SCI. The Chemical Industry Medal is a testimonial to men and women whose leadership, foresight, and contributions to applied chemistry have been, to a considerable degree, responsible for the growth of that industry. The medal has attained distinction by reason of the outstanding achievements and calibre of those who have been honoured. Past recipients include David N Weidman, Michael E Campbell, Jeffrey M Lipton, Dennis H Reilley, Raj L Gupta, Jon M Huntsman, and J Brian Ferguson.
